Payroll Team Leader

  • $120k-$130k + Super | Mascot, 2020 | Permanent Full time - Flexibility WFH
  • Lead a small, capable team through a period of transformation and growth
  • Play a key role in process improvement, systems projects, and team development

Lead and mentor a growing payroll team in a hands-on role with big projects, process improvements, and hybrid flexibility.

The Client

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing organisation with a national footprint and ambitious plans for expansion. With operations across Australia and New Zealand, they deliver critical services in a fast-paced and evolving industry. The business is currently undergoing a significant transformation, offering plenty of opportunity to drive improvements, influence change, and play a key role in building a more streamlined and effective payroll function.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As Payroll Team Leader, you will take ownership of day-to-day operations while helping guide the team through a period of change and improvement.

In addition to overseeing BAU processes, you'll act as a technical escalation point, contribute to system and process enhancements, and assist with the ongoing integration of multiple business entities into a consolidated payroll structure. The workforce is complex and heavily weighted toward New Zealand operations, with alternating fortnightly payrolls supporting over 1,500 employees across ANZ.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage end-to-end payroll delivery in a multi-entity environment

  • Lead, coach, and develop junior payroll team members

  • Provide support on award interpretation and ensure compliance across jurisdictions

  • Act as a subject matter expert on payroll systems and processes

  • Contribute to key transformation projects focused on automation, governance, and simplification

  • Step into processing where required to ensure seamless service delivery

  • Collaborate with stakeholders across the business to improve payroll accuracy and efficiency

ABOUT YOU

You'll be a resilient, hands-on payroll leader who enjoys problem-solving and thrives in environments where systems and processes are still maturing. You're comfortable juggling BAU with project work and have a calm, pragmatic approach that brings out the best in others.

We're looking for:

  • Proven experience managing payroll in complex, high-volume environments

  • Strong understanding of both Australian and New Zealand payroll legislation (NZ is essential)

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support junior team members

  • Confident user of payroll systems - ideally with experience in Payroll Metrics and UKG

  • A proactive and collaborative mindset, comfortable working through ambiguity
